Alexis Taylor, of Hot Chip, has kindly answered a few questions for Fred Perry Subculture ahead of DJing at the amorous French Kiss Party taking place at Village Underground on February 15th. Also DJing at the event are DJ Falcon, Gildas & Jerry Bouthier, Clancy, Let The Machines Do The Work (Live) + More.
How did you form Hot Chip? And why the name?
We started at school during a lunchtime concert, performing our own material and Range Life by Pavement. Someone in the crowd shouted out that that should be our name.
Tell us about your new music projects?
I make solo music and have a new album on the way; I am recording a new record with About Group which usually involves a fair amount of improvisation being recorded live in the studio rather than planned and pre-written sessions of song recording.
How would you describe your sound?
A bit muddy in the low to mid areas, and quite bright up top.
Who did you grow up listening to?
Prince, Dire Straits, Hoagy Carmichael, The Beatles, Crystal Gayle, Musical Youth.
What influences you, other than music?
What new music are you listening to at the moment?
New Moodymann album and the voices inside my head.
You will be playing Kitsuné's French Kiss Party on Feb 15th. What can we expect?
Gildas kissing Masaya on stage whilst I play Lil' Louis.
Who are your biggest style Icons?
There's a man in Wood Green who plays 'Spirit in the Sky' on the banjo and looks pretty great.
If you could have any artist, dead or alive, cover you, who would it be?
If it has to be any artist from Dead or Alive I'd go with Pete Burns.
