A Alex Gough Photo
Name, where are you from?
I’m Alex Gough and I’m from Waterford, Ireland.
Describe your style in three words?
Retro, Vintage, Skate.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
It's hard to pick one but in the last year, I’m gonna say Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah in The Sugar Club in Dublin. Ridiculous display of musicianship and talent, my jaw was on the floor for the whole gig. It was incredibly inspiring.
If you could be on the line up with any two artists in history?
This is a really tough choice to make but off the top of my head and in my recently played I’m gonna go with BROCKHAMPTON and D'Angelo.
Which Subcultures have influenced you?
Probably Hip Hop mostly, and skate culture too. I love the music and styles associated with both, I grew up really into skating and my love for aesthetic of it all kind of came back to me in the last few years. This track ('California Uber Alles' by Dead Kennedys) reminds me of those days, this is for the 12-year-old skater me.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
John Coltrane, just to talk to him and play music with him.
Of all the venues you’ve been to, which is your favourite?
I haven’t been to many venues outside of Ireland where I was part of the audience, but in Ireland, I think my favourite venue is the Olympia. It looks like an old theatre and I like that about it. I’ve seen some of my favourite artists there too so maybe I just hold fond memories of it.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Chad Hugo from The Neptunes/N.E.R.D. Crazy producer, Pharrell’s right-hand man, but you don’t hear his name as much as Pharrell.
The first track you played on repeat?
'I Believe in a Thing Called Love' by The Darkness. At about maybe 6 years old hahaha.
A song that defines the teenage you?
'Chocolate' by The 1975.
One record you would keep forever?
'To Pimp A Butterfly' by Kendrick Lamar.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
“You want to be the teacher
Don't want to go to school
Don't want to do the dishes
Just want to eat the food”
From 'Junie' by Solange. Reminds me nothing comes without work/practice. Banger too.
A song you wished you had written?
'Garden (Say It Like Dat)' by SZA.
Best song to turn up loud?
'Bonkers' by Dizzee Rascal.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'I Have Nothing' by Whitney Houston.
The song to get you straight on the dance floor?
'Dance Wiv Me' by Calvin Harris.
Best song to end an all-nighter?
'Smack My Bitch Up' by The Prodigy. Played it as the last tune of a DJ set one time and it got very wild both sides of the decks, so it's gotta be that one. Depends on the kind of night hahaha.
Any new music you are into at the moment?
New to me: 'Hasadallen Lights' by Yves Tumor.
