A Joesef Photo
Name, where are you from?
My names Joesef, and I’m from east end a Glasgow.
Describe your style in three words?
Smart, comfortable, classic.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Me and my mates went to see Jamie XX in Glasgow when he was touring the 'In Colour' album, we spent a lot of time melting to that album the whole year, he had rainbow lighting and we were pretty tuned to the moon. 'Loud Places' is just one of those tunes that set’s the whole room alight it felt like a proper moment, I’ll never forget that.
If you could be on the line up with any two artists in history?
I love A Tribe Called Quest so just to be near them I’d f*cking make their packed lunches or something, I love their instrumentals and drums too definitely a big inspiration for me. Chet Baker too, I’ve been obsessed with him since I was like 14, his voice is so soft he sort of plays trumpet how he sings too, he’s obviously passed away but I’d probably burst into flames if I met him.
Which subcultures have influenced you?
I’m not really sure which subcultures I’d fit into, My mum was really into Motown when I was younger and I became obsessed with the whole Northern Soul thing for a minute, then when I started going out at 17 I got into the whole club scene that Glasgow's famous for (Sub Club, Arches etc) I was always the guy at school who was pals with everybody from the emos to the jazz band people, I think I’m just somewhere in-between everything as a result.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Probably Charles Bukowski, I’ve been reading a few of his mad poetry books and watching interviews, he seemed to look at the world differently. He would probably hate my f*cking guts or something but think it would be cool, I would be ok with that.
Of all the venues you’ve been to or played, which is your favourite?
King Tut's has a special place in my heart. I sold out my first gig there in Glasgow and then went back in the summer and did another two nights, it felt like a victory lap. I just think a home crowd burns the building down a bit, there's nothing like it. They also put my name on the stairs which is cool.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Donny Hathaway, I’ve never been more taken aback by a voice before and I can remember the first time I heard it. I believe absolutely everything he’s singing. 'Giving Up' is the most devastating tune I’ve ever heard, man his voice shakes the whole gaff when I play it in on my speakers, worth getting evicted for.
