A Limi Photo
Name, where are you from?
Limi (Li&Mi) from Taipei in Taiwan.
What do you do?
Li: Singer, Lyricist
Mi: Producer, Composer
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Li: The most unforgettable gig I’ve been to was when I went to see Foal’s in Madrid. I happened to be traveling in Europe while Foals was on tour. It’s amazing how one first unlocks other firsts. My first concert ever was also my first ever concert in a foreign country! The audiences in Spain are quite different from those in Taiwan –they love to dance, even with beers in their hand. And what’s more impressive is they don’t spill!
Mi: Phoenix Live in Taipei. It was great to have the opportunity to see one of my favourite bands live. The music, the set lighting, the band members, the vibe of the concert. It was so moving and amazing!
Which subcultures have influenced you?
Li: Internet memes and dark humour.
Mi: Rock music has influenced me the most. If it wasn’t for rock music, I wouldn’t have developed an interest in music. and I wouldn’t have discovered all the different types of subcultures and influences.
Of all the venues you’ve played, which is your favourite?
Li: Legacy Taipei is a venue that holds a lot of meaning for many Taiwanese musicians. When I was a student, I got to see many of my favourite Taiwanese and foreign performers on that stage, including Blonde Redhead’s psychedelic music, or Ego Wrappin’s dance-inducing performances. When I had the opportunity to perform on that stage, I was very emotional.
Mi: Legacy Taipei. The most special performances in my life have taken place on that stage. If I have the opportunity in the future, I’d love to perform there again.
If you could be on the line up with any band or act in history?
Li : Amy Winehouse. She’s definitely a singer that has influenced me a lot. I really admire her courage in just being her true self.
Mi: I’d love to have the opportunity to perform with Coldplay. Whenever I’m feeling down, their songs give me a lot of solace and positivity. If I could perform with them, I would give my most perfect performance!
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Li: Aurora. I’d really want to observe her day-to-day life, and see how someone as unique as her spends her time.
Mi: FKJ. Recently, I’ve been watching all of his live sessions and videos and they’re so beautiful. His house is the home of my dreams. If I had the chance, I’d absolutely love to visit home and play music and chat together, and experience what it’s like to be in that type of environment.
Your greatest unsung hero (or heroine) in music?
Li & Mi: Everyone behind the scenes, including mixing engineers, PAs, stage technicians, etc. Without their professionalism and dedication, we wouldn’t have beautiful music and concerts. To them, we give our utmost respect!
What is the concepts of the playlist?
Limi: Vibing.
The first track you played on repeat?
Li: Ken Hirai’s song, ‘My Grandfather’s Clock’. When I was 12, I watched the music video of this song on TV. I was so touched by his warm voice and friendly melodies. I couldn’t help but be a big fan of his after that.
Mi: Keshi’s song, ‘Less of You’. Whenever I’m in a bad mood, the song’s melody and Keshi’s voice can always put me at ease. Whenever I’m thinking about relaxing, I’ll always put this song on repeat.
A song that defines the teenage you?
Li: Mr. Big’s song, ‘To Be with You’. When I was younger, my favourite album in my parent’s CD binder was Mr. Big’s ‘Lean Into It’. The final song on that album is ‘To Be with You’. I really love the relaxing, warm vibe of this song. At that age, I couldn’t really understand the English, but regardless, I would always sing along with the first verse of the song
One record you would keep forever?
Li: Damien Rice’s record, ‘B-Sides’.
Mi: edbl’s record, ‘Boys & Girls Mixtape’. I love all the songs on this record – and they’re perfect to listen to while out in nature.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
Li: Every one of Wu Bai’s songs.
Mi: edbl’s song, ‘Cigars’, featuring Alfie Neale & Jarki Monno. The vibe in edbl’s songs are so awesome. When I went to Orchid Island for holiday a while back, I was listening to edbl the entire time. When I came back to Taipei, I felt so inspired and motivated! I definitely need to thank the beautiful nature on Orchid Island and edbl’s music for that.
Best song to turn up loud?
Li: Our song, ‘Ice Cream’
Mi: Glass Animals & Denzel Curry, ‘Tokyo Drifting’. Every part is surprising and it’s really upbeat. When I’m driving, this song always pumps me up.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
Li: Wu Bai’s cover of Jacky Cheung’s song, ‘If this doesn’t count as love’. I first heard this song at a KTV when my friend sang it after that, I dug up Wu Bai’s version of the song and listened to it constantly. It’s clearly supposed to be a manly song, but I still found it really touching.
Mi: Kid Milli’s song, APP (featuring Loopy). A lot of my friends are surprised that I would like a rap song like this, but rap music has given me a lot of creative inspiration. Kid Milli is definitely my favourite rapper.
New bands you are listening to now?
Li: Easy Life. I absolutely love their live session! They’re all handsome and cute. I’m always in a better mood after watching their live session.
Mi: Recently, Li recommended a band called Fortuno to me.... they’re such a great band. There are so many surprises from the beginning to the end of their songs...I’m determined to listen to all of their songs now.
