A Match Montana Photo
Name, where are you from?
My name is Match and I’m from Middlewich. Living in London right now.
What do you do?
I’m a musician making disco and house tunes. I also run a mental health service for students called Walrus.
Describe your style in three words?
Leather Jacket Docs.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
I think seeing Courteeners at Heaton Park in Manchester is a day I’ll never forget. Just being there with all your mates seeing a band who came from the same place as you absolutely smashing it was unreal. Tunes, booze, mates… what more can you ask for. Something about when they come on and open with 'Are you in Love with a Notion?' Everyones going for it, flares are smoking, literally, a rainbow of smoke and everyone is going mental… it's magic.
If you could be on the line up with any two bands in history?
This one is easy. Broke Casino and Carnival Club. Broke Casino is my old band which is still currently playing and Carnival Club is a band we played with a lot. All of the lads are just really good mates of mine and I wouldn’t rather do it with anyone else. Those were some of the best times of my life hands down. I'd play 'Bleach' by Broke Casino which is the first tune we ever played and opened with and 'Sin City' by Carnival Club, f*cking mega tunes.
Which subcultures have influenced you?
Proper love the Mods, the Madchester scene and massively influenced by the New York mob days. Love all the mafia films, the stories and the fashion was just insane. The attitude was unmatched.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history
I’d have to go with either Jesus Christ or The Buddha. What a f*cking conversation that would be.
Of all the independent venues you’ve played, which is your favourite?
Playing a sold-out Deaf Institute in Manchester was an absolute madness. Think it was the best night of my life so far.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Easy as! Mark Ronson. The guy has literally made so many bangers and yet loads of people just think he's some DJ. Big inspiration to me.
The first track you played on repeat?
'This Love' by Maroon 5. I mean what a banger. I remember as a kid I’d absolutely blast it out aha.
A song that defines the teenage you?
'From The Ritz To The Rubble' by Arctic Monkeys. I don’t know any song that encapsulates being a teenager up north, trying to chat to girls, buy booze underaged and sneak into nightclubs. The early Arctic's material really made me fall in love with music and just felt right being a teenager in working-class England.
One record you would keep forever?
'Supersonic' by Oasis. Best tune ever written, need I say any more? My favourite band and the best song ever written. I’ve got it tattooed on me and nothing ever compares to it. The feeling I get when listening to it is unexplainable. I’ve covered it in every band I’ve ever been in and it's just an absolute anthem.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
“Sent to me from Heaven”
From 'Sally Cinnamon' by The Stone Roses. There's something about it. I just feel like some people were meant to come into your life and I believe in fate 1000%. I just feel like a lot of people were “Sent to me from heaven” as my life would literally be empty without sharing experiences and loving them.
A song you wished you had written?
'Smooth Criminal' by Michael Jackson. Has to be one of the best songs ever written. The music video is just something else. The whole mobster film aesthetic is ridiculous. Such a tune!
Best song to turn up loud?
'You Give Love A Bad Name' by Bon Jovi. Nothing better than sitting in the bath with a glass of wine and screaming your lungs out to it. Amazing tune.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'Moonlight in Vermont' by Frank Sinatra. My grandma sadly passed away back in December and it was her favourite song. I played in big bands growing up and I just fell in love with Sinatra, a beautiful beautiful song.
The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
'Night Fever' by Bee Gees. I literally get it on every day when I go for a walk, it's such a groove.
Best song to end an all-nighter?
'Fairytale of New York' by The Pogues. What other tune sounds mega when everyone's knackered, absolutely smashed and emotional. I’d end every night with it.
Any new bands you are into at the moment?
Love The Blinders. The craziest live shows, I don’t think any band can compare. Unreal tunes too!
