A Mychelle Photo
Name, where are you from?
I’m Mychelle and I’m from Hackney.
Describe your style in three words?
Casual, comfortable, functional. I need to be able to run for a bus if needs be.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
There have been so many amazing ones! What comes straight to mind today is Hackney Weekend in 2012 - that line-up had Jay-Z, Rihanna, Kanye West, Ed Sheeran, Florence And The Machine and so many others. To top it off, it was free and Hackney residents had priority tickets! I definitely left crying tears of joy.
If you could be on the line up with any two artists in history?
I would say Amy Winehouse for sure because then I’d also get to watch her live. Her voice was amazing! I’d also add Hiatus Kaiyote to the line-up because they are such an incredible band. It would be an incredible gig to attend. I wouldn’t even mind if I wasn’t singing.
Which subcultures have influenced you?
I would say women singer-songwriters who play guitar. Especially women of colour doing that. What is so beautiful about those artists is that the stories they tell in their music is all different from each other. And all their voices are different voices. For example Tracy Chapman and Corinne Bailey Rae; I am very influenced by artists like that.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
I would love to spend an hour with Bob Marley, preferably writing a song together. His music always has a great message and the music is just so good! It’s timeless.
Of all the venues you’ve been to or played, which is your favourite?
Union Chapel. The sound inside is incredible. I spent a lot of time there singing in a choir and then one day I was invited to do solo performance for a charity gig and I loved it. The crowd was so warm too. I have beautiful memories there.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Sister Rosetta Tharpe. She brought the electric guitar to gospel way before rock and roll was invented, leaving her to often be referred to as “the Godmother of rock and roll”.
Mychelle released her sophomore EP 'Someone Who Knows' in May 2022. Listen, purchase or stream it via orcd.co/someonewhoknows.
The first track you played on repeat?
'Umbrella' by Rihanna is the first song I had on repeat, no one could tell me to stop playing it. It was on my first phone that could hold music and it was the only song on my phone for ages.
A song that defines the teenage you?
This could be any Rihanna Song to be honest, but I’m going pick 'We All Want Love' from her 'Talk That Talk' album.
One record you would keep forever?
'Purple Rain' by Prince. That song is a work of art!
A song lyric that has inspired you?
“What do you think my brain is made for, is it just a container for the mind?”
From 'Pink Matter' by Frank Ocean (ft. Andre 3000).
The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
'You Rock My World' by Michael Jackson.
A song you wished you had written?
'Balance' by Sara Tavares. Such a beautiful song that makes me wish I could speak Portuguese.
Best song to turn up loud?
'I Feel For You' by Chaka Khan.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
I think people wouldn’t expect me to say that HAIM are one of my favourite bands of all time. Whenever they release an album I’m obsessed with it. I discovered their music via the song 'Falling'.
Best song to end an all-nighter on?
'Golden' by Auntie Jill Scott (she’s not actually my auntie but I love her that much).
Any new music you are listening to right now?
'Fast Lane' by Lavaud.
