A Nat Slater Photo
Name, where are you from?
Nat Slater and I’m from London.
What do you do?
I write songs and sing them :)
Describe your style in three words?
Thrift shop chic.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Definitely Frank Ocean at Lovebox. I ended up really close to the front and felt like he was singing the songs to me. It was mad because he’s a huge inspiration to me and my music. I’d been listening to his songs for years to finally hear them live, what a crazy feeling, I definitely shed a few tears.
Which subcultures have influenced you?
I’m influenced by a lot. I think definitely RnB cos I grew up on a lot of '90s RnB, that’s what my parents would always play like Boys II Men, Usher, Lauryn Hill. But also finding new stuff as I grew up like Jhene Aiko and Frank Ocean. I just love the richness of it really makes me feel warm and happy.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Stevie Wonder because I think he’s a living legend and genius, I would just wanna sit and listen to him play and sing for hours on end.
Of all the independent venues you’ve played, which is your favourite?
I played this gig in East London at the start of the year and it was such a sick venue, it was in this pub called The Victoria but the stage was through a door in a bookcase so it was almost hidden away but I thought it was such a cool venue and a super intimate and fun gig.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Brent Faiyaz he deserves so much more hype.
The first track you played on repeat?
'End Of The Road' by Boys II Men Or 'Ordinary People' by John Legend.
A song that defines the teenage you?
'Sunflower' by Rex Orange County.
One record you would keep forever?
'Get It Together' by India.Arie.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
"I wonder if you look both ways when you cross my mind"
From 'See You Again' by Tyler, The Creator and Kali Uchis.
A song you wished you had written?
'Super Rich Kids' by Frank Ocean.
Best song to turn up loud?
'Supermodel' by SZA.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'Golf On TV' by Lennon Stella.
The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
'Iskaba' by Wande Coal.
Best song to end an all-nighter?
'Best You Had' by Don Toliver.
Any new music you are into at the moment?
BENEE, Kaash Paige, Giveon.
