Grey, Practical and Free.

What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Probably the first concert I remember attending, which was OFWGKTA at Brixton O2 Academy. I’ve never really enjoyed being a spectator even before I had first performed myself, but I remember actually having fun for once.

If you could be on the line up with any artists in history?
Tommy Wright III - a south Memphis rap legend - I spent a lot of my teenage years discovering his music. My producer Omari Lyseight and I found his new IG page a couple of years ago and turns out he had recently been doing lots of shows and appearances. So maybe one day we’ll share a stage...and Madonna. Pop music is a different game now - success is measured by streams, views and followers, and it doesn’t accurately reflect whether people actually like you and what you stand for. In Madonna’s era, pop stars were a lot more distant from the general public and therefore more fascinating, and her music was powerful. Fans went to more extreme lengths to support them - clicking a sponsored post is very different from leaving your house to buy somebody’s album, and I want my fans to be that dedicated!

Which subcultures have influenced you?
I’ve been skateboarding from the age of 12 and it changed my life, growing up it was perceived that only goths with black hair and piercings skateboarded. When I started to meet other skateboarders I realised there was so much more to it, there is such a vast variety of cultures, ages and genders within skateboarding, meaning it creates a space for interacting with all kinds of people and gives you a sense of unity.

If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Theresa May. I don’t really let my mind ponder on the past, I’ve always focused on the present and future. And right now I have a lot of questions to ask her.

Of all the venues you’ve been to or played, which is your favourite?
Leeds Festival, it was my second festival performance and when my dreams first started to feel achievable. I stepped up onto the stage to 16,000 wasted kids willing to do anything you say. It will always be a cherished memory of mine and those I shared it with.

Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Nile Rodgers, the man responsible for almost every iconic funky riff ever. It’s crazy to me because I only learnt about him recently. I was walking down Southbank talking about synthesisers (obviously), when my friend Darius began to list his endless production credits and it literally blew my mind. "You mean to tell me that this man pioneered a whole genre/era and I’m only just finding this out now?". I’m still surprised to this day and constantly finding out more about his work. What a legend. Thanks Darius.
