A Rudy La Faber Photo
Name, what do you do?
Rudy La Faber, DJ / founder of FONO.
What music defines the teenage you?
Indie rock.
A song from your favourite album?
'Everlong' from the Foo Fighters album 'The Colour and The Shape'.
Best song to turn up loud?
'Cloak of Feathers' by The Sword.
What new music are you listening to?
Fauxe from Singapore is an amazing talent. Analog K locally.
What are you working on at the moment?
Working on my bar and event space Fono KL. We’re in our first year and trying as many new things in music as we can. It’s been great so far.
'Merry Go Round' by Tatsuro Yamashita.
Because I wanted a city pop song on the list that isn’t featured in every mixtape made by Youtubecore fans.
'Ekor' by Fauxe.
As mentioned this guy is making big waves in the scene and his work on Ikhlas needs to be heard by more people in the region.
'I Want Your Love (Todd Terje Remix)' by Chic.
I’ve been playing more disco and house sets and this is something I’ve revisited and have been dropping regularly. Perfect blend of sexy, deep, steady and fun.
'It No Possible (Joysticks remix)' by Fela Kuti.
Trainspotted from the great Dean aka Funk Bastard of Darker than Wax while down for my Singatour series of shows a few months ago. He dropped this in his set at a party and I couldn’t help craning my neck over to see who the remixer was.
'You’re a Melody' by Aged in Harmony.
A fun pick-me-up disco track and I love the strings used in the breakdown.
'Dia' by Sheila Majid.
Got into more ASEAN city pop thanks to Munir of Midnight Runners fame. If you’re reading, we’re still waiting for a full set at Fono.
'Give It Up For Love' by Ned Doheny.
Played at the inaugural Ram Jam festival thanks to the boys at Gaskey Alley. We were in Bali together and got to talking about Balearic at this amazing party I won’t talk about. They requested a similar set for their gig, and I was happy to deliver with this in the setlist.
'Nasi Goreng' by Free the Robots.
Got to meet the Low End Theory alumni when he graciously played at our venue. Super cool dude with amazing stories and a mutual love for a small indie venue. Haven’t asked where the name of this recent track came from, but I might have an inkling.
'Ate Quem Sabe' by Gal Costa.
One from the queen of tropicalia. It’s been a year full of life events, and a soft blanket of saudade has lingered longer than usual.
'The Makings Of You (live)' by– Curtis Mayfield.
If you’ve recently been in love you should listen to this one.
'Once' by Nubya Garcia.
Off the great compilation We Out Here. The UK Jazz is the area of music I’m most excited about and this record will give you a great look at what’s happening. Going to sneak in Black Focus by Yussef Kamaal if you haven’t heard it, but who hasn’t really?
'Oh Kekasih Ku' by Kathy Ibrahim.
A Malay cover of wishing on a star but somehow with even more soul and sentimentality. This song does things to me.
