A Thyla Photo
Name, where are you from?
THYLA, Brighton/London.
Describe your style in three words?
Ash, Soil, & Pearls.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Warpaint - They brought an energy, or vibe for want of a better word, that I had never experienced before. After seeing them, I changed my approach to guitar and the way I listened to music.
If you could be on the line up with any two bands in history?
My Bloody Valentine and Nirvana. Both of these bands are huge influences on our sound, it would be a total honour.
Which subcultures have influenced you?
Post-Punk, Shoegaze, Grunge, Dreampop.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Nikola Tesla - He was a genius so we reckon it would be an inspiring experience.
Of all the venues you’ve played, which is your favourite?
Concorde 2, it’s in our hometown, and we were lucky enough to play to a packed out crowd, so the atmosphere was electric.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Warren Ellis. If you don’t know him, he is a member of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. He’s extremely inspiring to watch live.
Fronted by the charismatic Millie Duthie Thyla were tipped by Huw Stephens as one of his Alternative Tips for 2018. The band were headliners at the BBC’s Biggest Weekend Fringe event and appeared at The Great Escape where their live show earned them plenty of plaudits.
The first track you played on repeat?
'That Don’t Impress Me Much' by Shania Twain.
A song that defines the teenage you?
'Summertime Clothes' by Animal Collective.
One record you would keep forever?
'Primary Colours' by The Horrors.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
“Up above aliens hover,
Making home movies for the folks back home,
Of all these weird creatures who lock up their spirits,
Drill holes in themselves and live for their secrets.”
‘Subterranean Homesick Alien’ by Radiohead.
The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
'September' by Earth Wind & Fire.
A song you wished you had written?
'Troublemaker' by Beach House.
Best song to turn up loud?
'Genesis' by Justice.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'Thinking of You' by Katy Perry.
Best song to end an all-nighter on?
'So What' by Miles Davis.
Any new bands you are listening to right now?
'Showgirl' by Sorry.
'Silk Spirit' by Drahla.
'Talking Straight' by Rolling Blackouts.
