How do you give birth to a band which grasps the essence of rock? In this case: an unexpected encounter on the university campus between 5 Belgian and Walloon boys. After several band formations, many names, cliques and groups, they finally settled down and began to hunt down their singer to help fray a path in their musical journey. At this point in time the band found itself driving head on into their 30’s. At this point there were two options, either let go and say good bye to the youthful dream which kept the blood pumping through their veins, or keep going with an unbreakable determination. It’s after receiving an extended amount of encouragement and support that the band decided to pursue their ambition with enthusiasm. They promised to release an album on the small land of Brussels, which nurtured and watched their dreams grow and blossom. Brussels rarely considered an epicentre for cultural activities is however known for its amazing music scene, festivals and their breath taking line ups. Its at the high profile festival “les nuits botaniques” that Applause delivered a performance reminding other bands that Brussels contains its own musical gems. Furthermore Applause has played at over 30 gigs as support band for prestigious headliners such as M aka Mathieu Chedid. This gave them enough media attention to attract the music labels seeking to scout out a dynamic band with depth and potential.

After signing to 3ème bureau, Applause gave birth to a radiant first EP, exuding the heat and depth of artists such as Radiohead, Nina Simone, Jeff Buckley…. The Ep met an immediate success through their track “Lighthouse”. And what if Applause was indeed the next band to deliver indie rock with elegance? A Marcel Proust’s Madeleine, taking us back to the nostalgic years of a Frail and troubled Nick Drake, or the velvet grunge era of Jeff Buckley? The answer came when the 5 entered the recording studio with DANIEL PRESLEY (The Breeders, Faith No More, Dionysus, etc….).

From this collaboration was born “Where it all began”, an album which blasts away any attempt to be chucked into a pre defined box. Their album is one vast play ground where the influences intertwine and play together to form a string of harmonious yet dense tracks.

This is indeed where the album Where it all began “tour de force” liesf. Escaping from clichés and the boundaries set by music stereotyping, Applause’s eclectic influences give birth to  11 tracks each strung, obscure and baroque  which navigate between pop, rock, electro, funk, reggae and Jazz.

The Catchy opening song “All about You”, the dark and velvet “Black Sand”, supported by a beautiful and fluid brass orchestration, remind us of the underlying savagery that haunts us all. “Where it all began” is elegant rock und pressure, where bitter sweet tracks take us on an adventure, to the depths of our persona where we probably might not always like what we find. Applause is quintessentially a band in perpetual movement, continually pushing boundaries in search of new horizons.
