SXSW has grown almost exponentially over past few years, to become a monster of a festival, dwarfing others by comparison with over 5,000 events. So, rather than try to cover everything we thought we'd slice through a sample of Friday (15th March) night's extensive programme to see what is available for the subculturally literate festival goer - and for those who couldn't afford the airfare but still like to dream.
Friday Night at SXSW - Our Pick:
The Coathangers 10pm - Easy Tiger
We've been fans of The Coathangers (pictured above) since we were introduced to them via their Flexi Disc release on X-Ray Recordings. The Coathangers are the current embodiment of the US's Riot grrrl subculture made incarnate. Check out the irreverent video to their track "Hurricane" below.
Swim Deep 11pm - Easy Tiger
Following The Coathangers at Easy Tiger will be hotly tipped band Swim Deep with their beach-grunge, a term we're all sure to hear a lot of this Summer, which despite its Nirvana-ish references is a more pop orientated derivation of what Wavves have been doing for a while now.
Lucy Rose 11.15pm - St. David's Historic Sanctuary
On a more acoustic British note, you can catch Lucy Rose, one of the big success stories of last year's British new music scene, with her well received festival appearances and debut album. In fact, you can see Lucy Rose for the second year running at the Dot to Dot Festival.
Youth Lagoon 12.00am - Club de Ville
One of the big stories in the US for 2013 and 2014 is Youth Lagoon aka Trevor Powers with an enormous sounding, American interpretation of psychedelic indie pop. Heralded as the next Flaming Lips or Mercury Rev Youth Lagoon are sure to be one of the key representatives for the US in the resurgence of psychedelia that everybody is talking about.
Wavves 12.30am - Bar 96
Mentioned earlier, Wavves are the perfect example of the cheeky surf-rock, currently proving that there few things harder for the establishment to deal with than a flippant sense of humour. Check out Wavves playing Dot to Dot 2012 here.
The Specials 12.30am - Stubb's
Admittedly, we've saved the best until last. It looks set to be a great year for UK 2-Tone and Ska in the US with The Specials and The Selecter both planning US live appearances over the Summer. This 90 minute set at Stubb's looks like it'll be a stormer - so enjoy yourself...
Timings are as stated by SXSW at time of publishing.
