It has been a meteoric rise for the Copenhagen trio Shiny Darkly. The band was formed in May of 2011 and to celebrate their one year anniversary, they will release the debut EP exclusively on vinyl and digital download. And this a mere two and a half months upon signing their deal with Crunchy Frog. A label representative had these words on the signing:

This is a band that’s not afraid to make a stand, to be themselves. They know what they’re doing and do it bleedingly well - a diamond that has never been in the rough so to speak!?”

The deal signed and in the books, label and band fired up to start recording an EP. A couple of studio sessions saw eight tracks ready to be recorded, supervised by label mate Jens “Benz” Søndergård (partly responsible for fine releases by Thulebasen and Pitchfork darlings Iceage)  in his shady studio in the industrial outskirts of Valby. The recordings were then mixed and mastered in assistance with Jesper Reginal (who has produced and mixed for Crunchy Frog artists such as PowersSolo, 18th Dye, Junior Senior and many more) at Crunchy Frog’s very own Kondi Frost studio. Five days and intensive nights and the vinyl hit the press. “Shiny Darkly” contains six strong tracks from the recording sessions and the artwork is designed by lead singer and songwriter Kristoffer Bech.

The “Shiny Darkly” EP takes the listener to a dark, highly electric, narcotic drone-like universe, much inspired by the post punk and shoegaze of the 80s by the likes of Joy Division, The Cure, Echo & The Bunnymen and Jesus & The Mary Chain. Even links to the 60’es and 70’es and The Velvet Underground, The Stooges and 13th Floor Elevators can be heard. Kristoffer Bech’s chanting and insisting vocals, sometimes bordering a lecturing is reminiscent of great personalities such as Nick Cave, Ian Curtis and a young Steen Jørgensen – it goes beyond reason that a 22 year old kid from fashionable Frederiksberg can carry such darkness, such weltschmerz and infinite longing. That is, unless you’ve seen the band’s convincing live performances.

Rumors about the in every sense young band spread like wild fire in Copenhagen’s underground music environment in the first couple of months of 2012 after a couple of live performances at below the radar venues. Since then, Shiny Darkly has wasted no time or breath. Show upon show in Copenhagen, even a handfull in London has strengthened their abilities and thus their performance by the week. Other than SPOT Festival, Shiny Darkly played the renowned and respected Roskilde Festival 2012.

Shiny Darkly is Kristoffer Bech on guitar and vocals, Mads Lassen on drums and Oliver Matthew Volz on bass. On the record and live they also count Kristian Marstal on Delta korg.
