To celebrate the 35th anniversary of the release of The Undertones' debut single "Teenage Kicks" - undoubtedly the ultimate anthem of adolescent nocturnal rebellion, and the upcoming release of "An Introduction to The Undertones" - we are honoured to have a playlist picked by Undertones founding member John O'Neill, who wrote the iconic song. From New wave to New York No Wave, listen to John's list and read on to find out a little more about his choices:

1. Pere Ubu "Heart Of Darkness"
One of the great bands of all time. This was the b-side to their first single, I think. Like all of their records, way ahead of its time. 50s rock n roll, 70s style.

2. The Fall "How I Wrote Elastic Man"
The best punk band of all time. I could’ve done my favourite eight Fall songs for this compilation, there are so many to choose from. Never get tired of hearing this. Genius.

3. The Mekons "Where Were You"
This reminds me of listening to John Peel. Every night there so many new songs from new bands. This always stood out. Fantastic hook.

4. The Fire Engines "Get Up And Use Me"
Another band ahead of their time. Dave Henderson was one of the best songwriters from the punk era.

5. Joseph K "It’s Kinda Funny"
The Velvet Underground are probably my favourite band of all time. This sounds just like them.

6. The Monochrome Set "He's Frank"
One of the great Rough Trade singles. Yet another forgotten classic.

7. The Saints "I’m Stranded"
The Undertones used to play this. I must have unsuccessfully tried to rip it off hundreds of times!

8. Mars "3E"
From the great New York No wave era. Don’t really know much about them but a great record.

To mark the anniversary, Salvo Records release the beautifully put together "An Introduction to The Undertones" (out 3rd June) - a 22 track CD featuring all with a 2 hour DVD featuring Teenage Kicks: The Story Of The Undertones in which the late John Peel makes a pilgrimage to meet the band in their hometown of Derry, live footage from 1979’s Northern Irish Shell Shock Rock documentary and France’s Chorus: The Undertones – Live at Le Palace (1980).

There’s also an additional seven promo videos and studio performances from The Old Grey Whistle Test and The Tube.
