THE THURSTON MOORE GROUP
TIM BURGESS (DJ SET)
7TH NOVEMBER 2017
A true icon and innovator of music and sub-culture - plays the legendary club for the first time in 30 years.
Thurston Moore is best known as one of the founding members of Sonic Youth, undoubtedly one of the most influential and innovative figures in American culture of the last 40 years.
Along with Kim Gordon and Lee Ranaldo, Thurston Moore formed Sonic Youth in the early 1980s in New York. Initially an experimental post-punk band, they remained fiercely independent throughout the 1980s pushing the boundaries of guitar music in the US and Europe. In the 1990s they signed to a major label and continued to be one of the most original and unorthodox bands on the then flourishing alternative scene, spearheading the movement that gave the world bands such as Nirvana and Pavement.
Yoko Ono, Chuck D, Dave Grohl, R.E.M. and Spike Jonze are among the many names that he has worked with throughout his prolific career, with admirers including the likes of David Bowie who also cited Moore as a major influence. As well as his work with Sonic Youth, Thurston Moore has also released as a solo artist from the mid-1990s with his most recent album 'Rock n Roll Consciousness' released to universal critical acclaim in April 2017.
Although starting life in 2015 with a conventional rock band set up, SORRY's tastes are wide-ranging and reflect their age and omnivorous Youtube-era musical upbringing where rock, hip hop, noise, electronic soundscapes, grime and folk all sit side-by-side and without confusion. Accordingly, all these influences and more form the band's unique nascent musical universe - a bold, ambitious and at times irreverent canvas on to which the symbiotic intensity of Asha Lorenz and Louis O'Bryen's emotional and hyper-melodic songwriting is projected.
A perfect demonstration of Thurston Moore’s continuing legacy.
The Charlatans frontman has been a driving force of British sub-culture for three decades. Pushing boundaries and supporting new experimental artists via his record label O Genesis. Tim will play a special set throughout the night.
