New Jersey-based indie heavyweights Yo La Tengo have released their 13th album, Fade, on multiple formats (including deluxe vinyl) via longtime label Matador Records.
The album, recorded with Tortoise’s John McEntire at Soma Studios in Chicago, finds the legendary trio (Georgia Hubley, Ira Kaplan and James McNew) trading in psychedelic folk (opening track “Ohm” and midway point “I’ll Be Around”), strings-laden Americana (“Is That Enough”), jazzy indie pop (“Well You Better”), feedback guitar jams (“Paddle Forward”), Krautrock (“Stupid Things,” “Two Trains”), pastoral heartbreak (“The Point of It”) and orchestral ambition (closing track “Before We Run”).
Fade’s highpoint is the spare “Cornelia & Jane,” which features the always breathtaking Hubley on lead vocals.
