03Interview

Name, where are you from?
Tor, Leicester originally, South Coast now.

What do you do?
I’m a musician and I perform as Billy Nomates. I also work part-time to pay the rent.

Describe your style in three words?
Boyish. Casual. Scandi.

What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Without doubt Sleaford Mods last year at this weird out the way venue on a trading estate in Southampton. They just blew my socks off.

If you could be on the line up with any two bands in history?
1 - Captain Beefheart - cos he’s just batshit but also does sincerity really well.
2 - Beastie Boys - cos they had an original take that nobody has quite matched in that area.

Which subcultures have influenced you?
I like Punk morals, but I have always loved the Northern Soul movement. I love its raw energy and relentlessness.

If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Hmm. The guy that plays Uncle Buck, John Candy. Just feel like he was cool.

Of all the independent venues you’ve played, which is your favourite?
I played The 100 Club recently and it was just such a good atmosphere - the stage is huge and the room feels really panoramic as well as iconic. I had a LOT of fun.

Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
I don’t know if he’s unsung, but I really like Mike Scott as a lyricist and musician from The Waterboys. 'Bang on the Ear' (The first thing I learned to play on the fiddle).

04Playlist Notes

The first track you played on repeat?
Eddie and the Hot Rods - 'Do Anything You Wanna Do'.

A song that defines the teenage you?
The La’s - 'Feelin'.

One record you would keep forever?
Oh god. Probably The Stranglers - Greatest Hits.

A song lyric that has inspired you?
‘But don’t ask me what I think of you, I might not give the answers that you want me to’ by Fleetwood Mac - 'Oh Well'.

A song you wished you had written?
Paul Curreri- 'Letting Us Be'.

Best song to turn up loud?
Anything by The Beastie Boys.

A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
LCD Soundsystem - 'Oh Baby'.

The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
John Spencer Blues Explosion - 'Get Down'.

Best song to end an all-nighter?
American Music Club - 'All My Love'.

Any new bands you are into at the moment?
Nah not loads really haha. I like an artist called Xenia Rubinos, but she’s been around a bit. She has an album called Black Terry Cat - really very good.
