What do you do?
Actor.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
I saw Elton John in California at The Disneyland Resort Diamond Celebration event (the resort’s 60th anniversary). I loved his natural exuberance - he just seemed to sparkle! The musicians I like are the ones who are celebrated simply because of their music. Not really the ones who are in the spotlight for non-musical reasons.
Which subcultures have influenced you?
I’ve recently been trying to learn English. When I watch movies, I’ve realised how different the British English accent is. British people have this crisp, neat, and polite way of speaking. That element has been a big influence on me.
Of all the venues you’ve visited, which is your favourite?
I’ve only ever been to two live music shows, and I will choose one of those. It is the Sweet Love Shower festival near Lake Yamanaka at the base of Mt. Fuji. I wasn’t really into the idea at first but a friend invited me, so I went along. I had a really fun time. I don’t listen to much J-Rock, but there were some cool acts there, like Suchmos and Glim Spanky. I’m usually more of an indoor cat, but I enjoy that liberating feeling you get sometimes when you are outdoors.
If you could be on the line up with any bands in history?
So, my dream situation would be Elton John and myself performing together when we are both fifty years old. We would be on the piano, singing an original song that we had written together. I’ve played a bit of American football in the past, so the venue would be the Super Bowl. I imagine us as two old guys playing a super-charged song, giving it everything.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
I’d like to spend an hour with John Lennon, just before he was taken from us. He’d come to my house and we’d talk until the wee hours about how he sees the modern world.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
That would be the Underworld vocalists Karl Hyde and Rick Smith. I’m not 100% sure which one of them wrote 'Born Slippy', but I feel they should be more well-known as individuals for their work. That song is so destructive. It might just be me, but I think that track can speak to the generations to come.

The first track you played on repeat?
That was probably 'Champagne Supernova' or 'Stand By Me' by Oasis. My brother listened to Oasis, and I kind of liked what I heard. After that, I started listening to their music.
A song that defines the teenage you?
I felt a lot of pressure during those years, so I’ll say 'Under Pressure' by Queen.
One record you would keep forever?
I’m going to choose '(What’s The Story) Morning Glory' by Oasis. I thought about a Beatles record, but the songs are a little bit too gentle. Oasis songs have this fighting spirit. As long as this album was with me, I could keep on living.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
That would be 'Your Song' by Elton John. Not as much for the lyrics, but the feeling I get from the title. You often hear that songs are “dedicated to someone.” But, for me, even though 'Your Song' sounds like it is saying the same thing, I don’t think it is. What I’m trying to say is, “your song” and “a song written with you in mind” are very different things. At least, that’s the feeling I get from the title.
Best song to turn up loud?
'Hey Jude' by The Beatles. I’m imagining me walking up a slope and the song just popping into my head. Perhaps when I’m outdoors or on location, or during breaks in filming.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
Probably 'Happy Xmas (War Is Over)' by John Lennon. That song suddenly came to me as I was putting the playlist together. I love the way the feeling changes halfway through. It reminded me again what a cool track it is.
Any new bands you are listening to now?
The 1975. I was studying English, and I couldn’t remember the word “sincerity.” After being taught the word, I did a search, and the track 'Sincerity Is Scary' came up. I listened to the song and thought they were a cool band.
