03Interview

Name, where are you from?
Paddy Considine. Burton On Trent.

Describe your style in three words?
I’m a Mocker.

What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Guided By Voices. Iowa City. Bob Pollard started the show by announcing "Hey! Paddy knows this one!" Then kicked into 'Closer You Are'. Doesn’t get any better.

If you could be on the line up with any two artists in history?
Guided by Voices and REM. What a gig that would be. We’d open then get to sit back and watch two incredible bands do their thing.

Which subcultures have influenced you?
I think punk has influenced me the most. Not so much in a fashion sense, but definitely from the perspective of a working class kid who aspired to do something artistic. It empowered kids like me to get off their arses. It removed the elitism out of music. That’s part of its legacy.

If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Mark E. Smith. That would have been interesting. A couple of pints with Mark. I don’t know what we’d speak about. I freeze around people I admire. He’d likely take this piss out of me for being a w*nky actor. Saying that, he did mention 'Dead Man’s Shoes' in his autobiography. He liked it. That’s a start.

Of all the venues you’ve been to or played, which is your favourite?
Rock City is my favourite venue. I’ve seen so many great bands there over the years. I always dreamed of playing the main room and we finally got the chance when we supported The Charlatans. We’ve played there a few times now and the crowd are always brilliant. I was there last November watching The Hives, who blew the room apart. One of my best memories was seeing The Flaming Lips play there on the Yoshimi tour. It used to be famous for its sticky floor, but they’ve replaced it now. I think at one point they were selling sections of it to fans. I didn’t buy one. Imagine all the booze and puke and piss and god knows what else ingrained into that floor…

Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Robert Pollard. Released over a hundred albums. Master of melodies and hooks. A lyrical genius. In his sixties and still out there doing it. A true artist to his core. His work floors me. Every album has a moment that blows me away. I think he writes very enlightening lyrics at times. Get him in the Hall Of Fame.

Paddy Considine's band, Riding The Low, will release their new album 'The Death Of Gobshite Rambo' on 8th April 2022. Pre-order or pre-save it via linktr.ee/ridingthelow.
