Valen Lim

Graphics — Malaysia

Name, where are you from?
Valen Lim. Penang, Malaysia.

What do you do?
I do branding and create graphics, collect magazines and toys.

Describe your style in three words:
Patterns. Blue. Black.

When did you first get into the creative field?
2013.

What was your inspiration behind your design for the RSD tote bag?
The idea is called ‘house of rock’. I grew up in a heritage shophouse during my childhood and I really had a good time. Jukeboxes and vinyl records bring back old memories so I thought to combine these elements with memories of my old home and create a house of rock.

What inspires you?
Magazine, books, travel, people and music.

Which music defines the teenage you?
Mostly Cantopop and Mandarin pop. But I slowly shifted to indie pop after I discovered a cool Youtube channel that used to share all kinds of music of new bands - mostly indie and alternative pop.

A song from your favourite album?
‘Only The Young’ from Brandon Flowers’ ‘Flamingo’

What has been your all-time favourite gig?
M83’s show in KL, when they released their ‘Junk’ album.

What new music/bands are you listening to?
I’ve been listening to Japanese City Pop and the soundtrack from the film ‘Call Me By Your Name’. One of my new favourite bands is The Fin.
