The Wytches

London / November 2015

Thursday 26th November 2015

On 26th November Fred Perry Subculture were joined by Heavenly Recordings at The Garage, London, to celebrate 25 years of the iconic, highly influential, British independent music label, Founded by Jeff Barrett in 1990. The line up featured signings from Heavenly's current roster: The Wytches, Hooton Tennis Club, Nots and Britain, with DJ sets from Primal Scream's Bobby Gillespie and Andrew Innes and Saint Etienne's Pete Wiggs and Bob Stanley. Watch exclusive live videos from the gig the below:

The Wytches

An underground band quickly amassing a huge following, The Wytches wasted no time establishing a sound and vision that encompasses the dark arts and the more extreme limits of rock, but which is never prescriptively macabre. Far from it, the band displays a broadness of sound - all at once the songs reference surf, grunge, metalcore and psych, while never appearing overstated or derivative.

'A Dead Night Again'

Their darkness is filtered through a prismatic lens, surpassing any single label or pigeonhole other bands are often too easily relegated to.

'Holy Tightrope'

Recorded at an 8-track analogue Studio in Hackney, their debut LP 'Annabell Dream Reader' captures faithfully the live sound of The Wytches, tracked as it was in two days of fertile outflow under the supervision of producer Bill Ryder-Jones (ex-The Coral).

'Summer Again'

Not ones to navel-gaze or self-aggrandise, The Wytches admit a strong desire to erase and ‘switch up’ their sound with each album - plans are already afoot for a more intricate, more instrumentally eclectic second album.

Hooton Tennis Club

Hooton Tennis Club sing about the small details of life. Theirs is a world in which curious observational lyrics abound; poetic riddles and wry nuggets that contort the banality of everyday existence while never succumbing to cynicism. Quite the opposite in fact: Hooton’s songs are bathed in sunlight, and find romance where others see squalor.

'Barlow Terrace'

Their debut album 'Highest Point In Cliff Town' is the sound of the summer of adolescence slipping into the autumn of adulthood. Here the wit of Kurt Vonnegut and twisted storytelling of Wes Anderson collide to tell tales of banal jobs, relationships, memorable parties and passing characters.

'Always Coming Back 2 You'

Bringing the Heavenly sound in a perfect circle back to its nineties creation. Also, perfectly echoing the vibe referenced in the latest This is England 90 series, by Shane Meadows.

NOTS are a 4 piece, all XX, “nuevo no wavo” band from Memphis, TN. playing their first ever UK gig – amidst huge interest from Brit music press.

Unpredictable guitars, celestial synths, and punctuated vocals swirl around the repetition of a powerful rhythm section to form a sound and a live show not easily classifiable but entirely addictive.

Drummer Charlotte Watson and guitarist / frontwoman Natalie Hoffmann are the band's two constants throughout a handful of roster changes. NOTS' current lineup also includes Alexandra Eastburn on synth, an instrument she picked up to join NOTS and to record on their first full-length LP We Are Nots, and bassist Meredith Lones, another new Memphis musician, and the most recent addition to the band. NOTS' newest punk-noise-psych-collision 7”, Virgin Mary, aggressively follows on the heels of their debut LP, foreshadowing an ever expanding experiment in direction of things to come for the band. Don't miss out.

A relatively new signing to Heavenly, Britain channel the likes of Cocteau Twins and PJ Harvey, and have recently had their music aired on BBC 6 Music and been picked as NME's BUZZ ACT OF THE WEEK with live slots supporting TOY, Stealing Sleep, Georgia and other respected peers.

Primal Scream

Bobby Gillespie and Andrew Innes from iconic indie band Primal Scream - the band that gave birth to era defining songs such as 'Loaded' and landmark albums including 'Screamadelica'.

Saint Etienne

Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs of St Etienne - another band who stand alone comprising writing a key chapter of modern British independent pop music history, and of course, the band responsible for one of Heavenly's first releases in the form of their album 'Foxbase Alpha'.

About Heavenly Recordings

Much of the Heavenly story is defined by its founder – Jeff Barrett. A true British maverick, with an unerring and unwavering ability to clearly see the next trend in music. Or, arguably create it, by giving a platform to supremely talented artists that mainstream labels fail to recognise.

Unorthodox and different in his approach - with a healthy mistrust of establishment - Jeff perfectly embodies the spirit of the founder of the Fred Perry brand, Frederick John Perry.

Heavenly has been the home of some of the best and most diverse independent
artists around since its founding in 1990 by Jeff Barrett. 25 years later In 2015 the label remains independent. As well as the artists listed above, the label has provided a creative platform for some of the biggest names in music from the last three decades including: Manic Street Preachers, Doves, Beth Orton, Temples and Mark Lanegan. The current roster still supports new talent with recent signings and releases including H. Hawkline, Gwenno, Stealing Sheep, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard and Eaves, alongside many others.
