Name, where are you from?
JEALOUS, based in Berlin.

What do you do?
Adi: Bass & vocals.
Paz: Guitar & vocals.
Uri: Drums.

Describe your style in three words?
Sweat / filth / love.

What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
A: Swans. I saw Swans a few years ago on their 'To Be Kind' tour, which is a great album. It was a sitting concert, they had a massive gong, it was pretty culty. After the show, I went outside and a crazy thunderstorm started, which was a perfect encore, they probably caused it.

If you could be on the line up with any two artists in history?
U: The Stooges. In case you need any introduction, Iggy pop is, hands down, the greatest performer of our times. He took the stage back in the ’70s to a new dimension. I don’t remember which famous singer told this story, but as a kid he a drove with his dad 5 hours (each way) to see Iggy Pop in concert, the band played the intro, as they went into the first song, Iggy ran on stage and dove headfirst into the crowd, he broke his ribs (FIRST SONG!) on the stage barrier finished two songs and went off stage. Now that’s insane, isn’t it?
MC5. Rock’n’roll wouldn’t be the same without MC5, their insanely explosive energy combined with each of them just hitting their instruments loud & hard, before anyone else did it. You can see this in the video, the crowd just doesn’t know what just hit them!

Which subcultures have influenced you?
P: It’s a combination. having the ability and perspective to look back at all of the things I (and we) find inspiring, you get to understand and find the roots of it in many subcultures. You have the rebellion and/or the nihilism of Punk, combine it with the fantasy and pushing gender boundaries of Glam, we grew up in the '90s, so grunge was a big part of what shaped us, but I think post-punk and garage are the genres we can identify with the most. I think in today’s world, there are no boundaries between these ideas because we can create our identities from the combination of them all.

If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
A: Lady Jaye & Genesis P-Orridge. Besides being amazing musicians they have always been true and pure with their art, and they are an inspiration for what love could be.

Of all the independent venues you’ve played, which is your favourite?
U: It’s impossible to name one independent venue as a favourite! All independent venues, that book shows, promote them, host the bands etc... just to give us a stage to let loose on, is pretty bananas in this time and age.
Most of these venues are run solely on a passion for music and not for any money, anywhere on this planet, if you do that, you keep live music a force to be reckoned with. We applaud you!

Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
P: Not unsung, but not as recognized worldwide, Charlie Megira. One of the greatest that passed away a few years ago. I probably cried at every show of him I’ve seen. He is undoubtedly a musical hero, a visionary. One of these extraordinary artists, like no other, you can listen to anything from his discography and discover this beautiful sensitivity.

04Playlist Notes

The first track you played on repeat?
P: 'Poupee De Cire, Poupee De Son' by France Gall. Not the first one, but one I've listened to so many times on repeat.

A song that defines the teenage you?
P: 'Date With The Night' by Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Will never forget the first time I saw this video late at night and became completely mesmerized. I think YYYs were one of the first contemporary bands I fell in love with, it’s probably the song I've DJed the most in my life, the best tune to dance to, and feels just as fresh and exciting as it did the first time I heard it. Everything about this song, makes even my blood cells vibrate.

One record you would keep forever?
P: 'Electric Warrior' by T. Rex. There are so many, but I’ve been so obsessed with T. Rex for the last few years, and this one is so perfect.

A song lyric that has inspired you?
U: 'Changes' by Black Sabbath. Hard to explain how this song hits, but I’m sure anyone with a beating heart could find a way to connect to these lyrics. To write a story, an emotional and personal story into a song, is very hard. The beauty of it, that the lyrics give you all the space in the world to make this lyric about yourself, and that’s f*cking art right there. “I’M GOING THROUGH CHANGESSSS” melts our hearts into a million pieces each time.

A song you wished you had written?
U: 'Killing In The Name' by Rage Against The Machine. Oh no, you didn’t see this coming, did you!
Really simple, they released this song in 1992, and to this day it’s relevant, maybe more then ever, those lyrics will stay relevant forever, for anyone who feels suppressed by the government.

Best song to turn up loud?
U: ALL SONGS, listen to all music loud! Damn it, crank up Mozart in the morning too. #loud4life
P: 'Rebel Rebel' by David Bowie.
A: 'Whatever' by Ty Segall.

A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
A: 'Untitled 06 | 06.30.2014' by Kendrick Lamar.  It’s not something that is easy to recognise in our music, but we are really into hip-hop. This album is pretty lo-fi, none of the songs got real titles, and this one is featuring CeeLo Green.  I really love the way lyrics progressed in certain genres that used to be considered more “tough” or masculine. Vulnerability is more outspoken and it’s something you can see in current punk bands as Idles, or current hip-hop artists as Kendrick or Earl Sweatshirt. this is the first line of this song:
“These metamorphic supernatural forces dominate what I see,
A Gemini, do I let these personalities always conflict in me.”

The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
A: 'Last Night A DJ Saved My Life' by Indeep. I’m such a disco sucker, and everything about this song is perfect- the bass, the drums, the vocals, the phone ring! It was sampled quite a lot, even by Madonna, Tom Jones and Boards of Canada.

Best song to end an all-nighter?
A: 'Sleep Talk' by Shannon and The Clams. If you want to pretend you are in a John Waters film, which we obviously do; it’s a good start.

Any new music you are into at the moment?
Amyl and The Sniffers
Suck
Avishag Cohen Rodrigues
Ditz
Palm Squirrel
The Pleasure Magenta
