03Interview

Name, where are you from?
I'm Lucinee, I was born in Berlin but based in Hamburg for a long time now.

What do you do?
I am a music producer, DJ and I curate my own event series. Before that, I studied fashion and costume design and worked at the theatre.

Describe your style in three words?
Not following trends.

What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
A concert to remember was Meuban at 'Hazimmer' in Tel Aviv back in June 2018. Me and two friends ended up there by chance and the band performed in a very small and intimate setting with amazing visuals. Unexpected is often the most beautiful.

If you could be on the line up with any two bands in history?
Scooter and Fraktus would be a lot of fun for obvious reasons - preferably at the afterparty.

Which subcultures have influenced you?
I am strongly influenced by the rave culture and the queer community. It goes hand-in-hand since the roots of raving and electronic music culture stemming from the queer community in the first place.

If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Lady Gaga, cause her music was very empowering to me in a very dark time of my life. Also, because she is a badass on every level and it would be fun to have a drink with her.

Of all the independent venues you’ve played, which is your favourite?
One of my favourites was an old hangar outside of Copenhagen at a joint event of three collectives called Endurance x Mala Junta x Mess, that focus on creating high-quality raves and safer spaces. The energy and vibe was insane (the venue itself as well) and I felt like I was a part of it all, not just a guest DJ. Another venue worth mentioning is Berghain's Säule – no explanation needed.

Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
I wouldn't say the greatest, but I really admire Grimes. She is a true DIY mastermind, uncompromising, an amazing producer and artist - from recording and engineering her own music, creating her own artwork to directing and editing her own videos. Grimes was always ahead of her time – never giving a f*ck.

04Playlist Notes

The first track you played on repeat?
'Keep Talking' by Pink Floyd from 'The Division Bell'. It takes me back to my early childhood. My parents played the record to my brother and me over and over again. The music touched me emotionally as a child – even brought tears to my eyes and I couldn't really grasp or understand it. Today I understand why.

A song that defines the teenage you?
'Freestyler' by Bomfunk MC's.

One record you would keep forever?
My own debut EP 'Black Moon' - I will cherish this vinyl forever.

A song lyric that has inspired you?
"I'm not sorry
I'm not your b*tch don't hang your sh*t on me
(It's human nature)
You punished me for telling you my fantasies
I'm breakin' all the rules I didn't make
Express yourself don't repress yourself
You took my words and made a trap for silly fools
You held me down and tried to make me break
Express yourself don't repress yourself
Did I say something true?"

From ‘Human Nature' by Madonna.

A song you wished you had written?
Too hard to choose because there are so many outstanding tunes.  'Sin and Salvation' by Dax J because it's phenomenal and the production level and vibe is insane. It really resonates with me a lot.

Best song to turn up loud?
'We Trip And Roll' by Lucinee.

A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'One Minute Man' by Missy Elliott (ft. Ludacris). I used to listen to R'n'B and hip-hop in my teenage years, took street dance classes and even danced in tournaments. Missy is so iconic and she set the bar for eclectic music videos. I love her work with this powerful, weird and eerie vibe. Timbaland is an outstanding producer and from today's point of view I appreciate his work enormously and have a better understanding and more attention for it.

The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
'Naughty Boy - Narciss' BDSM Remix' by Chlär.

Best song to end an all-nighter?
'Acid Phase' by Emmanuel Top.

Any new bands you are into at the moment?
I can absolutely recommend all artists/releases from Oslo based UTE collective, one of the top labels for contemporary '90s influenced trance music (non cheesy).
'Pull Up - HT Mix' by Oprofessionell.
'Winds Of Tandaloor' by The Dosadi Experiments.
