03Interview

Name, where are you from?
Valeriy Belobeev, Moscow.

What do you do?
Photography.

Describe your style in three words?
It usually depends.

What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Sigur Ros at B1 Club Moscow in 2008. I was young, in love, and the whole concert was like a miracle.

If you could put any three bands in history on a lineup?
I chose an impossible line up: Nirvana, Queen & Joy Division.

Which subcultures have influenced you?
I always loved extreme sports and listened to alternative rock, nu-metal and some punk rock when I was a teenager. MTV had a great influence on me at that time. Then I watched the music video for 'Come To Daddy' by Apex Twin and I got obsessed with electronic music and underground music culture and I still am.

If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
It would be Stanley Kubrick, he is a real genius in my opinion.

Where is your favourite independent venue?
Well, it was Rabitza Club in Moscow, a legendary underground venue, handmade by music enthusiasts and shut down by police two years ago.

Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Eleven Pond, a post-punk/synth-pop band, they released a great album back in 1986 and broke up the next year.

04Playlist Notes

The first track you played on repeat?
'Faint' by Linkin Park. It was on a cassette, so I had to rewind the tape every time.

A song that defines the teenage you?
'Every Me Every You' by Placebo. The soundtrack of the young me, full of energy and too little self-confidence.

One record you would keep forever?
'Untrue' by Burial.

A song lyric that has inspired you?
'I Need My Girl' by The National.

A song you wished you had written?
'Ночь' by Кino.

Best song to turn up loud?
'Sleep Now In A Fire' by Rage Against The Machine.

A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'Your Sweet 666' by HIM. HIM was a great band to listen to while skateboarding.

A song to get you straight on the dance floor?
Would be definitely 'Breathe' by The Prodigy - timeless.

Best song to end an all-nighter?
'New York, I Love You But You're Bringing Me Down' by LCD Soundsystem.

Any new bands you’re into at the moment?
Viagra Boys, cool new post-punk from Stockholm.
