A Arlo Parks Photo
Name, where are you from?
My name is Arlo Parks. I’m from West London.
Describe your style in three words?
Androgynous, co-ordinated, fluid.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Loyle Carner at Shepherd’s Bush Empire. It was my first time experiencing live music, I could feel the bass in my chest, everyone was screaming all the words - I came out of there knowing that was what I wanted to do with my life.
If you could be on the line up with any two artists in history?
Vashti Bunyan and David Bowie because they were both so idiosyncratic and unapologetically themselves - I would feel like I had properly made it.
Which subcultures have influenced you?
The Beat Generation in the '50s, the world of postmodern cinema and bebop in the '40s. All those subcultures were centred around transgression and pure expression - I found that very inspiring.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Plato because I feel like I’d come out of the conversation a little wiser.
Of all the venues you’ve been to or played, which is your favourite?
The Roundhouse because it’s such an iconic, gorgeous venue.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Muddy Waters, the father of Chicago blues, because he inspired so many great guitarists and musicians like Bob Dylan and Led Zeppelin but still remains so so underrated.
The first track you played on repeat?
'From The Ritz To The Rubble' by Arctic Monkeys.
A song that defines the teenage you?
'Easy Easy' by King Krule.
One record you would keep forever?
'Wild Is The Wind' by Nina Simone.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
“And she feeds you tea and oranges that come all the way from China”
From 'Suzanne' by Leonard Cohen.
The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
'Hey Ya!' by Outkast.
A song you wished you had written?
'Appletree' by Erykah Badu.
Best song to turn up loud?
'Never Fight A Man With A Perm' by Idles.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'I'm A Slave 4 U' by Britney Spears.
Best song to end an all-nighter on?
'Avril 14th' by Aphex Twin.
Any new music you are listening to right now?
'Brown Steel' by Choker.
'Lately' by Celeste.
'Tired and Sick' by Otha.
