03Interview

Name, where are you from?
Wafah’s a French-Arab sandwich (with mayo), Lucy’s from just outside Manchester and Celeste’s from the green, green island of Ireland.

Describe your style in three words?
Scorpio season, extended.

What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
C: Grace Jones at the Royal Albert Hall. A gorgeous human tornado.
W: The Cure at Bestival, where they headlined. They’re so incredible live.
L: Scissor Sisters at Men in 2006. Always here for the queers.

If you could be on the line up with any two bands in history?
A late night show supporting Primus and Suicide, partly because we’d want to see what freaky requests they have on their rider.

Which Subcultures have influenced you?
New wave, post-punk and math-rock mainly, but we also have elements of krautrock, psych and grunge in the new tracks we’re working on. The new music sounds a bit like pre-drinks with The Slits might do if you met them in a quaalude dream.

If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Beers with Charles Bukowski in an LA dive bar to hit him up for racing tips.

Of all the venues you’ve been to, which is your favourite?
It’s a tie between the Windmill in Brixton and the Shacklewell Arms in Dalston. Both are full of our favourite kinds of freaks and feel like home.

Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Not to say that her work is 'unsung', exactly, but Delia Derbyshire and her incredible musical legacy is definitely underrated. We Stan.

04Playlist Notes

The first track you played on repeat?
I can’t remember the first track I’ve ever played on repeat, but 'Dearth' by FOALS has definitely been played too many times to count.

A song that defines the teenage you?
'Panique' by Juniore: the perfect teen anxiety anthem.

One record you would keep forever?
'Lullaby' by The Cure. It’s timeless.

A song lyric that has inspired you?
In 'Of Schlagenheim', black midi have a lyric that goes “I dream of a woman with the teeth of a raven / and the hands of a porcupine”. It’s a pretty memorable image. We’re into it.

A song you wished you had written?
'Cossacks Are' by Scott Walker.

Best song to turn up loud?
'My Name Is Mud' by Primus. Les Claypool’s bass needs to be heard at full volume.

A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'nigastu no heiti' by the cabs is a frenetic Japanese indie bop that we adore, but I don’t think people wouldn’t necessarily guess we’d be into it.

The song to get you straight on the dance floor?
'Hot Wax' by King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard never fails to disappoint.

Best song to end an all-nighter?
'His Box' by Dalis Car. Moody Egyptian Talking Heads vibes.

Any new music you are into at the moment?
Powerplant, PVA, Big Joanie, Fontaines DC, Sleep Eaters, Pregoblin and Dry Cleaning. And they’re not bands, but Arlo Parks and Jessica Winter are making amazing music we love.
