Name?
Frank Turner

Where are you from?
Originally Winchester, now North London.

What do you do?
I am a singer, songwriter and performer.

Describe your style in three words?
Punk rock country.

What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Hard question; possibly Godspeed You! Black Emperor at the Hackney Ocean in about 2001.

If you could be on the line up with any two bands in history?
Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, Fugazi.

Which subcultures have influenced you?
I grew up as part of the hardcore punk scene.

If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Clive James.

Of all the venues you’ve played, which is your favourite?
Another toughie; I'd say Nottingham Rock City has to be up there.

Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Townes Van Zandt. Townes is the songwriter's songwriter - under-appreciated in his own time, mainly due to his chaotic life, he's gone on to be a major influence on a lot of people.

English folk-punk troubadour Frank Turner will release his retrospective album 'Songbook' digitally and on CD on November 24th, with vinyl and deluxe boxsets following on 15th December 2017. You can pre-order it here.

'Songbook' will feature a set spanning his illustrious career, bringing together highlights from all six studio albums as well as ten brand new 'Songbook' versions of some of his most well-loved tracks.

04Playlist Notes

The first track you played on repeat?
Probably 'Killers' by Iron Maiden, though it was on cassette at the time, so no repeat function back then!

A song that defines the teenage you?
'Everything Sucks' by Descendents.

One record you would keep forever?
'Reconstruction Site' by The Weakerthans.

A song lyric that has inspired you?
"I'm leaving tomorrow but I could leave today"

'Song To Woody' by Bob Dylan.

A song you wished you had written?
Far too many to mention, but let's say 'The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down' by The Band.

Best song to turn up loud?
'Eagles Become Vultures' by Converge.

A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
Everything by ABBA.

Any new bands you are listening to now?
Homeless Gospel Choir, Girli, Sean MacGowan, Against Me.
