A Mattiel Photo
Name, where are you from?
Mattiel Brown, Georgia.
Describe your style in three words?
Aware but unbothered.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
A matinee Bjork concert at Carnegie Hall on a Sunday morning. A friend of mine had extra third-row tickets. It was incredible.
If you could be on the line up with any two bands in history?
The Ramones and The Beastie Boys - we'd all just be there to have a good time.
Which Subcultures have influenced you?
The Memphis group in the early 80's and their industrial design work. Their radical concepts for normal household objects was so limitless.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Oscar Wilde - I think we would have a lot of questions to ask each other.
Of all the venues you’ve played, which is your favourite?
We just played Paradiso in Amsterdam which is a beautiful venue. Definitely my favourite of the tour. We also had a particularly rowdy crowd that night.
Your greatest hero or heroine in music?
Bob Dylan. He reminds me of a mountaineer or the captain of a ship. It seems like he's always been in the middle of an endless search for the truth.
Mattiel Brown's rock 'n' soul sound is influenced by such diverse artists as Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, Andre 3000, Marc Bolan, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, The Staple Singers and Jack White. Her self-titled debut album was released through Heavenly Recordings in 2018.
The first track you played on repeat?
Most likely 'Believe' by Cher. I think I got that CD when I was eight.
A song that defines the teenage you?
'We're A Happy Family' by The Ramones.
One record you would keep forever?
Outkast's 'ATLiens'
A song lyric that has inspired you?
"Sayin' ain't I pretty and ain't I cute and look at my skin,
Look at my skin shine, look at my skin glow,
Look at my skin laugh, look at my skin cry,
When you can't even sense if they got any insides."
'Last Thoughts On Woody Guthrie' by Bob Dylan.
A song you wished you had written?
'The Hand Springs' by The White Stripes.
Best song to turn up loud?
'Only Daddy That'll Walk The Line' by Waylon Jennings.
(Thank you, Jonah.)
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'23' by Mike WiLL Made-it ft. Miley Cyrus, Wiz Khalifa, and Juicy J.
The song to get you straight on the dance floor?
'Give It Up' by KC and the Sunshine Band.
Best song to end an all-nighter?
See the last answer.
Any new bands you are into at the moment?
BRONCHO.
