03Interview

Name, where are you from?
Moyka, I’m from Hallingdal in Norway, currently living in Bergen.

Describe your style in three words?
Casual club witch.

What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Right now I have a really good memory of seeing Highasakite last summer on a mountain surrounded by fjords and other mountains. It was so beautiful, atmospheric and euphoric being there together with my friends in nature.

If you could be on the line up with any two bands in history?
Robyn and Röyksopp. They are both amazing acts. Would be a dream to be on the line up among them.

Which Subcultures have influenced you?
I’ve listened to a lot of rock and indie-rock growing up, so I feel like that has been an important part of why I got into music in the first place. When I started learning to produce I became more interested in electronic club and dance music. So that genre and subculture has also been very important to me and still is. I get really inspired by the music, fashion and the people.

If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
I think I would choose Kate Bush. I feel like she has a lot of wisdom and good stories to tell. Would love to just talk with her about how she sees the world.

Of all the venues you’ve been to, which is your favourite?
My favourite venue is probably Østre here in Bergen. It’s a very beautiful, small place which has a lot of sound installations and electronic music performances. I always get inspired when I go there.

Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Lorde comes to mind, even though she has a lot of recognition. She just always inspires me in her music, sound and lyrics. Also - it seems like she just wants to be herself all the time and do what feels right to her whatever that might be, and I absolutely love that.

04Playlist Notes

The first track you played on repeat?
'Dancing Queen' by Abba. I remember listening a lot to Abba when I was a child because of my mom, so I had to include them in this playlist!

A song that defines the teenage you?
'Call It What You Want' by Foster The People. The “Torches” album by Foster The People was really important to me as a teenager going through, you know, teenager stuff. I never really felt like I fit in, and when I heard the lyrics and the sound of Foster The People, I felt like they knew that and had made their music just for me. That was soooo cool!

One record you would keep forever?
'Born to Die' by Lana Del Rey. This album meant a lot to me when it came out. I had never heard anything like this and I just couldn’t stop listening to it. I loved it so much – and I loved how it sounded like every song fit perfectly together sonically and thematically in this album. This was also the first time I had really, really sad down and analysed production and elements in the songs.

A song lyric that has inspired you?
“You are airborne, you cry silver rays, Will it ever float, will it ever soar along”

From 'Feather' by Little Dragon. I read somewhere that the vocalist Yukumi, wrote this song inspired by a book on evolutionary psychology where she read that men were often more likely to take risks than women. Which upset her and made her write this song as a statement to assert her as a risk-taker. This was very empowering and inspiring to me.

A song you wished you had written?
'Dancing On My Own' by Robyn. I mean… it’s the best pop song ever written. That’s just a fact.

Best song to turn up loud?
'Raingurl' by Yaeji. The only way to listen to this song is turned up loud.

A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'Adore You' by Harry Styles. I was kind of shocked myself that I got so into Harry Styles’ new album because I had never any relation to One Direction and had always thought that boybands are silly. But Harry Styles is not like any other boyband or boy in a band – who would have thought?

The song to get you straight on the dance floor?
'Douha (Mali Mali)' by Disclosure. Yes!

Best song to end an all-nighter?
'Ser Du Nå' by Amalie Holt Kleive. When you’re ending an all-nighter, you’re kind of tired, right? This is such a beautiful song to end the perfect night with.

Any new bands you are into at the moment?
'Morrow' by 070 Shake. I have come across one of 070 Shake’s songs before, but back then I didn’t understand what it was, but a couple of weeks ago my friend Eirik sent me the FIFA 2021 soundtrack playlist on Spotify and BOOM. I was hooked. (I do not play FIFA, but I have huge respect and love for the FIFA soundtrack. It’s ALWAYS good songs there. It’s a dream of mine to have one of my songs there.)
