03Interview

Name, where are you from?
I’m Rachel Chinouriri and I’m from Croydon.

Describe your style in three words?
Chic modern streetwear.

What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
I kind of have two, Pitchfork Paris was an incredible experience. However, Coldplay live is something I hold near to me as they will be my favourite band until I die and no one can change my mind. I’ve seen them twice and it was UNREAL both times! I couldn’t believe it. Their music unlocks so many memories for me.

If you could be on the line up with any two bands in history?
Coldplay and Daughter. I love them both in such different ways and I love the energy they give in live performances.

Which Subcultures have influenced you?
Indie, early noughties pop, African acapella music. I loved music from the girl groups in the early noughts (like Girls Aloud or Sugababes) I’ve always had indie influence in my life and then my parents shared a lot of African acapella music with me as a kid.

If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Eartha Kitt. I’ve been really intrigued by her recently and wish I could have a conversation with her. She seems so powerful and strong at a time when women were extremely oppressed.

Of all the independent venues you’ve played, which is your favourite?
I’d say Moth club. I like how the sound translates in the space, I have really happy memories there and the vibe of the space itself is everything! I can’t really find the words to describe it but I do love it.

Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
My nephew Jayden is going to be a superstar. He’s loved music from the moment he could walk. He was standing and dancing before even walking. He’s so determined and indulged in music and it reminds me of my younger self.

Rachel Chinouriri recently released her new EP 'Four° In Winter'. Listen, purchase or stream it via rachelchinouriri.lnk.to/FourDegreesInWinter.

04Playlist Notes

The first track you played on repeat?
'Afrodisiac' by Brandy.

A song that defines the teenage you?
'Youth' by Daughter. To be honest... The entire 'If You Leave' project.

One record you would keep forever?
'A Rush of Blood To The Head' by Coldplay.

A song lyric that has inspired you?
“We are homeless, homeless, Moonlight sleeping on a midnight lake”

From 'Homeless' by Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

A song you wished you had written?
'Reverse Faults' by Sampha.

Best song to turn up loud?
'No Idea' by Don Toliver.

A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
Any Pop smoke and ANYTHING drill. I’ll say my favourite song right now is 'WOW' by Tion Wayne… I don't know, I’ve just been repeating it recently a lot. Really good song!

The song to get you straight on the dance floor?
Currently, it's 'Thot Shit' by Megan Thee Stallion (I do love a bit of Megan).

Best song to end an all-nighter?
'Je Te Laisserai De Mots' by Patrick Watson.

Any new bands you are into at the moment?
Black midi, I have always known of them but I've found myself listening to them a bit more recently.
