03Interview

Describe your style in three words?

experimental, vibrant, funky.

The first track you played on repeat? And where did you play it?

Sugababes - Overload

I know the lyrics to this word for word because I always sat there with the lyric book that comes with the CD and just sing it over and over. It's heavily influenced by the Cuban music genre 'Cha-cha'. Such a blend of jazzy & pop sounds and just incomparable.

A song from your favourite album? And what does this track mean to you?

GoldLink - No Lie (feat. WizKid)

When this album came out last summer, I listened to it on repeat. It was around the time I went to Afronation festival in Portugal. There isn't really a correlation between this album and the festival but whenever I listen to it, it just reminds me of all the good memories.

A song from your most memorable gig?

Kentphonik - Hiya Kaya - Rocco Deep Mix

I heard this when Black Coffee played it in one of his sets at 02 Brixton Academy in 2019. Since then I listen to it non-stop. Sometimes I don't even let the song finish before I start it again. It's a house track with soulful vocals.

A song that always gets you up and dancing?

Bucie - Get Over It

I always just want to get up and dance when I play this. It's so groovy, and I love Bucie's vocals. I'm not a good dancer but that doesn't mean I won't dance! It just makes me want to move my hips. One of my favourite SA house tracks for sure.

A new song you're listening to? Why do you like this artist?

M Huncho - Tranquility

This is quite a random song to throw into this mix, but I discovered it yesterday and I've had it on repeat. It's a nice blend of genres, as M Huncho himself describes it as 'Trapwave'.

Best song to turn up loud? And why?

Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 - Mas Que Nada

This song is vibrant and uplifting. The definition of a feel-good. I don't know many of the lyrics but I just make it up as I go. When I'm at home with my mum and dad, I'll play this song and we'll just sing at the top of our lungs and dance round the house.

A song that defines the teenage you? And the memories it evokes?

Rui Da Silva - Touch Me

I can't really think of a song that defines teenage me, but I remember hearing this when I was younger and my brother reminded me of it years ago. Whenever I play it, it just reminds me of my blackberry phone. The song is so summery and has so many layers. 8 minutes well spent.

An anthemic song? Why does it get your pulse racing?

Diddy - Last Night (feat. Keyshia Cole)

I remember first hearing this all the time when I was little, but I forgot all about it and have recently rediscovered it. For me I will never get bored of this song. It's so catchy and I love Keyshia Cole's voice. It really is timeless. Cure and the cause.

Best song to end an all-nighter?

AYLØ - Gardens

I would definitely end an all-nighter with this song, it's so laid back and chilled with quite a lazy beat. It was sampled by George Benson's song - Affirmation, but I love both versions. I think my favourite sound in this song is the guitar, it adds such a jazzy feel to it.
