03Interview

Name, where are you from?
Harrison, George, Chloë, and Tom. We’re from all over but based in New Cross.

What do you do?
We’ve each got our own quirks but collectively we’re a blend of '70s Post-Punk and '80s New Wave/Goth.

Describe your style in three words?
Pick n Mix.

Which music defines the teenage you?
For me personally [Harrison], coming from the North West, it’s impossible to ignore the material that came from the area. The influence of New Order and Echo and the Bunnymen on our own work is undeniable. One album that we all played on repeat when we were teenagers was ‘I Had The Blues But I Shook Them Loose’ by Bombay Bicycle Club. That always gets played in the van to gigs.

A British icon who has inspired you?
John Cooper Clarke, his voice, his persona, his unimaginable wit and intelligence. He’s unashamedly him, and that stuff lasts forever.

What has been your all-time favourite gig?
Recently it would be Bo Ningen at SWN festival. We’d just finished our set and legged it over to see them, it’s a proper powerful set that you can’t take your eyes off.
[Harrison] - Another unforgettable gig a couple of years ago was Pixies with my Mum. ‘Bossanova’ was THE album in my Mum’s car, so seeing that with her was pretty special.

What is your favourite independent venue to watch live music?
It’s a standoff between our favourite locals, Rye Wax in Peckham or The Five Bells in New Cross. We’ve experienced some pretty mental nights in both of those venues, playing and watching as punters. One’s a basement in the beating heart of Peckham, and the other is an old school Millwall boozer.

04Playlist Notes

What was the first song you played on repeat?
'Everybody Wants to Rule the World' by Tears For Fears. My Dad used to be a boxer and he used to come out to this track. It’s probably the least intimidating song in existence, however, the message is pretty brazen and assured. It’s become one of our drive time anthems and is a firm classic in our car karaoke set.

A song you wish you'd written?
'Golden Brown' by The Stranglers. I’ll never forget hearing that for the first time. I was 17, sat on the bus after sleeping on my mate’s floor the night before, with unbelievable back-ache, and no house keys. It’s also the tune that bonded us together as a band, as we all had this eureka moment at a house
party when it came on in the background, we all clocked each other nodding along and that's how we got talking about starting the band. ’Cars’ by Gary Numan is a very close second.

A song from your favourite album?
‘Grinding Halt’ off ‘Three Imaginary Boys’ by The Cure. We tried to go and see them after recording some demos in summer but didn’t make last entry. So as needs must, we just grabbed a load of cans and watched over the back fence.

What is the last piece of music you bought?
I already had it on CD but I bought it again on vinyl. 'Power, Corruption & Lies' by New Order. Nothing sums up being a teenager better than ‘Age of Consent’. It’s the epitome of “Happy-Sad” if that makes any sense.

Best song to bring people together?
As a band, we all love listening to Elvis - and let’s face it who doesn’t. One of the only working CDs in Chloe’s car belongs to The King, and our favourite is undoubtedly ‘Suspicious Minds’. It’s a song for any time of day, and we’ve even walked on stage to it a few times, I mean come, if that can’t bring
people together, nothing can.

Best song to end an all-nighter?
'Dry The Rain' by The Beta Band. I still can’t put my finger on it but there’s something so satisfying about everything in that tune. wind, rain or shine, it works.

The best love song of all time?
Hands down, 'Love and Happiness' by Al Green. No competition. It’s just heartfelt and god damn sexy, and that’s all a love song needs to be.

Is there a song you like that people wouldn't expect?
'Cleo’s Mood' by Jr. Walker & The Allstars. It’s an Instrumental track with an undeniable amount of heart and soul, it’s mad how much it achieves without saying a word.

What new music are you listening to?
We’re always sharing tunes amongst the four of us, so there’s always a bit of a wrestle for the aux cable. Scalping and Pet Shimmers have been on repeat a lot, and then three great bands we know from New Cross; Truman Dinosaur, Scrounge, and Blue Bendy. Definitely keep an eye on them.
