Name, where are you from?
VIVI DFT, from Japan.
What do you do?
Record producer.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
I don’t really have any...I rarely go to gigs to begin with.
Which subcultures have influenced you?
'Misfits' is my favourite drama series that’s set in England and I liked the club scenes with drum and bass played regularly. Those scenes were nicely portrayed and I found it pretty cool, to be honest.
Of all the venues you’ve played, which is your favourite?
My fellow musician MIMI usually takes the front seat and I especially recall the moment at the STUDIO COAST. It was during the MC battle when I felt very happy to see her standing out front on the stage. It’s such a good memory. It always feels like a festival considering the size of the venue with those distinctive futuristic speakers.
If you could be on the line up with any bands in history?
It has to be Queen. There’s a scene on ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ but I want to experience the exciting moment during the overdub at their recording. I’ve been taking the challenge of producing tracks in session style for the past few years while living in the states. When new ideas emerge spontaneously, that’s my favourite part of it.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
A quiet conversation with John Lennon sitting in a marvellous café. I wouldn’t get to the heart. Just an ordinary chit-chat would be nice.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
I’ve been keeping an eye on Flohio, a female rapper. It’s common for the rappers here in the US to express their situations and social dissatisfaction so it’s surprising yet empowering to see her being bold about it.

How did you select the tracks for this playlist?
Tracks that I’ve gone through in my life. I don’t tend to focus on nationalities when I listen to music, so I’ve given myself a chance to look back and make the list. It starts with ‘Please Please Me’ by The Beatles.
The first track you played on repeat?
One that I heard in the primary was ‘Help’ by The Beatles. Influenced by my teacher at the time.
A song that defines the teenage you?
’7 Days’ by Craig David. I got into R&B and Hip-hop after hearing this track and I can relate with the lifestyle during my teens.
One record you would keep forever?
Just to remember the love of adolescence, I’d choose ‘Born to do it’ by Craig David!
A song lyric that has inspired you?
’Imagine' by John Lennon. It’s the first ever song I heard in my life. I used to learn English during primary and I had a go at translating the lyrics as a child.
Best song to turn up loud?
’Joga’ by Bjork. She was born in Iceland but I heard she also lives in London too so I hope that’s okay. It was requested by the others at a karaoke bar I often go in Nakameguro.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
SCANCH caught my ears after getting into Queen. 'My Beloved Mary-lou' is my favourite.
Any new bands you are listening to now?
My favourite is Bexey, a grime infused rapper. He’s got plenty of distinctive overtones.
