03Interview

Name, where are you from?
Zola Blood, a four piece from Hackney Wick.

What do you do?
Write electronic based songs that lean towards the melancholic.

Describe your style in three words:
Simple Dark Easy.

What music defines the teenage you?
Nirvana and Soulwax.

A British icon that has inspired you?
PJ Harvey for being the consummate artist and constantly reinventing herself.

04Playlist Notes

What was the first song you played on repeat?
M - Shamefully, it was probably Bryan Adams ‘I Do It For You’, my sister had his record and I was obsessed with the Robin Hood movie.
P - Billy Ray Cyrus ‘Achy Breaky Heart’, I sang it at my 5th birthday party.

A song from your favourite album?
That's a hard question, a recent favourite song would be 'Ivy' by Frank Ocean.

A song you wish you had written?
'The Rip' by Portishead.

What was the last piece of music you bought?
'A Love Trilogy' by Donna Summer, found in a great record shop in Stoke Newington called Lucky Seven.

Most meaningful lyrics to inspire change?
Etta James ‘This is a man's world. But it wouldn’t be nothing without a woman or girl’.

Best song to bring people together?
'All My Friends' by LCD Soundsystem. Every Time.

What has been your all-time favourite gig?
Queens Of The Stone Age, Sunday night at Glastonbury. Most powerful music ever live.

What was the last album you bought?
'Upstepping' by Oliver Coates, every sound on the album was recorded using only a Cello with additional effects giving it the illusion of other sonic textures; it’s amazing what he manages to do.

Best love song of all time?
Possibly a bit obvious, but Al Green ‘Lets Stay Together’. Love songs from that time somehow feel more legitimate.

Is there a song you like that people wouldn’t expect?
'Toxic' by Britney Spears is a guilty pleasure and probably one of the best pop songs ever made.
