03Interview

Name, where are you from?
Niko, Berlin.

What do you do?
DJ and Host.

Describe your style in three words?
Modern, diverse, loose.

What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Will tell you about the most important gig for me personally. 'Solid Session' by Format was the last track of my four-hour opening set for Robert Hood at one of our KUR parties at PAL club. With booking him we celebrated five years of doing parties as a crew and also wanted to express our respect and admiration for Detroit techno roots, Underground Resistance and the POC community.

If you could be on the line up with any two bands in history?
Blawan and Helena Hauff. I really love how they are both in their own league. Each of them with a style and attitude that is one of a kind.

Which subcultures have influenced you?
Rave subculture, as a melting pot of social interaction, freedom of thought and expression that comes with it in the best case.

If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Would love to meet Frantz Fanon and have a conversation. Through him, I began to develop my own perspective on post-colonialism which changed my understanding of the world and society I live in.

Of all the independent venues you’ve played, which is your favourite?
Kurhotel because that's where I started playing.

Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Douniah. Unsung only due to the fact of her being just at the start of her career.

04Playlist Notes

The first track you played on repeat?
'Irgendwie, Irgendwo, Irgendwann' by Nena. My first album was by Nena and this song was running up and down my old CD player, me sitting in my room, playing or reading next to it. Though it was the original mix.

A song that defines the teenage you?
'Genisis' by Justice. When I was thirteen my older brother gave me a pirated copy of this album, just marked with an edding. I remember listening to 'Genesis' and wondering, what is that? Got hooked immediately and that actually made me dive into electronic music.

One record you would keep forever?
'SAKU' by Susumu Yokota. Susumu Yokota (R.I.P) was an outstanding artist in the sense of ambient music production. His music lets your thoughts float. This album is a timeless piece of work, although it gets a very new meaning in the context of lockdown. Listen to it in its entirety.

A song lyric that has inspired you?
"I can walk on the moon now" :)

From 'This Is How We Walk On The Moon Now' by Arthur Russell.

A song you wished you had written?
'O Superman' by Laurie Anderson. Weird & beautiful

Best song to turn up loud?
'Hard To Say' by DjRUM. Turning up loud in sense of a festival sound system setting, this track sends you away with lightspeed. Perfect sound design, balanced between dreamy and hard with several genre influences hidden in its structure.

A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'Parte After Parte' by Big Tril. I didn’t even expect myself to like it, but it's just catchy af.

The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
'Pump Up The Jam' by Technotronic. Ain't gonna lie about it haha.

Best song to end an all-nighter?
'Polynomial-C' by Aphex Twin. There are infinite options, I think it's all about the situation and how you feel in that specific moment.

Any new bands you are into at the moment?
'Der Weg von meiner Wohnung ins Uber und vom Uber ins Berghain, ist schon anstrengend' by DJ Gusch - delivering heat straight from Vienna. 'Drowning by Numbers' by Osheyack - big mood on Svbkvlt label.
