Name?
Hooton Tennis Club

Where are you from?
The Wirral

Describe your style in three words?
Do It Yourself

What was your all-time favourite gig?
Collectively, seeing Supergrass play outside Belfast town hall on New Year’s Eve in 2009.

Which British subculture means the most to you?
For James it's the 1970s glam rockers, especially Bowie, Eno and Bolan. Harry and Ryan are into the 60s, and Callum's Dad was really into Orange Juice and the art-punk movement in the 80s.

How should your music be listened to?
Preferably on vinyl, and loud, in the morning too, naked. Or in your confused bowl-of-cereal, 7am-dressing-gown wake-up state, like the cover of that Harry Nilsson album.

What British music icons inspire your sound today?
Well, pretty damn non-original but, The Beatles were a big influence on our latest record. Also, Edwyn Collins as he produced 'Big Box of Chocolates', and he's a musical god. Bill Ryder-Jones as he produced our first album and nurtured us into rock 'n' roll life.

If you could share the bill with any British band in history – who would it be?
Playing with Supergrass, or Blur in the 90s would've been cool.

A British music icon that has inspired you?
Recently Edwyn Collins. He produced our second album 'Big Box of Chocolates', which was an amazing experience for us all. He's a true legend and very inspiring human being.

Hooton Tennis Club are a 4-piece Indie Rock band from The Wirral, UK. They are currently signed to Heavenly Records and released their second album 'Big Box Of Chocolates' in October 2016. More on that can be read here.

They also previously performed at SubcultureLive to celebrate 25 years of the iconic indie label Heavenly Records. Watch exclusive live videos below or see more from that show here.

04Playlist Notes

What was the first track you played on repeat?
Not sure on any of our personal first repeats, but Harry and Callum once listened exclusively to 'Archie, Marry Me' by Alvvays. Ryan and James currently only listen to J.J. Cale. It's all subject to change though...

One record you would keep forever?
'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' by The Beatles.

A song from your favourite album?
'You Still Believe In Me' by The Beach Boys.

A song you wish you had written?
The whole of 'Zuma' by Neil Young.

What was the last piece of music you bought?
'It Ain't Easy' by Ringo Starr (7" single).

A song lyric that has inspired you?
"I don't want to see a ghost
It's the sight that I fear most
I'd rather have a piece of toast
Watch the evening news"

from 'Life' by Des'ree.

Is there a song you like that people wouldn’t expect?
Pure Shores by All Saints.

Best love song of all time?
'In My Life' by The Beatles.

Best song to turn up loud?
'Since I've Been Loving You' by Led Zeppelin.
Listen out for the squeaky bass drum pedal. When remastering some songs Jimmy Page heard it and now he can't listen to the song ever again. #BoringDadKnowledge

Best song to bring people together?
'Hey Jude' by The Beatles
